QCYC Line Honours for Raw to the Core

At the finish the finish boat inadvertently handed the QCYC Line Honours pennant to Raw to the Core – they had been told to give it to the first boat to finish – they did!

Raw flew it for 1 and a half hours from the masthead before happily handing it over the next fastest boat – Ichi Ban. Ichi Ban is reported to have offered “no comment”!

AYS Raider finished 12:42:37

This puts them 2nd to Raw to the Core at present on both OMR and PF

Raw to the Core finished at 10:16:10

Raw to the Core was the first boat home with Ichi Ban the Volvo 70 in sight but very much behind.

APC Max capsized north of Waddy Point   22/3/08 1:05

APC Max capsized around 11.30 just north of Waddy Point, almost exactly where Emu did last year. All crew are safe and communicated via handheld radio with Wilparina, Cut Snake and Earthling who were in the vicinity. They used the loom of lights and a trawler sighting nearby to locate the stricken vessel. All crew are now on board Wilparina and heading for Gladstone.

Raider One Design safely in Mooloolaba    21/3/08 21:35

Raider One Design has just rung to say the boat is now safely tied up at Mooloolaba. The only problem being that as it is Good Friday no amber ointment can be purchased to assuage the pain!

Raider One Design retired   21/3/08 18:25

Raider One Design, Jamie Morris and Roger Overell, has retired with a broken rudder. They are returning to Mooloolaba under their own power with no injuries.

Jamie Morris has spoken to our Race Control at Gladstone.

As at 19.00 they are approximately 10 miles NNE of Mooloolaba motor sailing back. They have broken one rudder and are taking it easy.

Start Report by Richard Jenkins    21/3/08 15:18

Initially there was a concern that there would not be enough wind to start the race and as the start time drew closer it became obvious that it would be a slow start.

By the time we had made a small modification to the start line by removing a crab pot it was time for the 5 minute gun. By now the wind was blowing 5-6 knots from the east so unfortunately there was no chance of a spinnaker start which would have been very nice for the large number of spectator boats that turned up for the occasion and followed the fleet for quite a while.

The first boat over the line was Cut Snake followed very closely by AYS Raider and Wilparina 2 was third.

A big thanks goes out to the Police, who after last years mishap with a boat obstructing the start, made sure all the spectator boats were well clear of the start line.

Also, thanks to Mayor Don Secombe for coming aboard and enjoying Geoff and Margret Finnagens delicious lunch. Not to forget Vic and Judy for their valuable race start experience. From the start boat point of view the crew of Kestrel had a wonderful morning.

Slow Start Fast Finish    by Ian Grant    published 21-Mar-2008

The super fast Brisbane to Gladstone multihull fleet racing for the Allyacht Spars trophy will face light winds when the start signal is fired off Manly at 11o’clock this morning.

This is not a forecast that will place smiles on the faces of the fast lane sailors in the competitively strong fleet of 20 yachts representing South Australia, Victoria and Queensland...

Champion Skipper has a second String to his Bow    by Ian Grant    published 20-Mar-2008

Melbourne skipper Martyn Riley is expected to endure a wet and windy ride on the small catamaran Raw to the Core when he defends his line honours trophy in the Multihull Yacht Club of Queensland Brisbane to Gladstone Race over the Easter weekend.
Normally Martyn Riley and his talented crew including Stuart Bloomfield would sail in protected comfort under the spray dodger of the race record holder Raw Nerve.

But the power sailing Raw Nerve which set the amazing record of 18 hours 55 minutes and 9 seconds with an anti-foul blistering 16.28 knot average in 2004 remains in a Melbourne boat yard with a shattered mast...

Catamaran Champ back on Track    by Ian Grant    published 11-Mar-2008

Melbourne Orthodontist Martyn Riley suffered a painful expense when his record breaking catamaran Raw Nerve was dismasted during a wild 40 knot gust in the Port Lincoln race last month.

Her expensive carbon-fibre mast which had previously powered the super fast maxi-catamaran to smash the 308 nautical mile Brisbane to Gladstone Race record with the average speed of 16.28 knots was shattered in several pieces when a turnbuckle snapped.

However despite the expensive set back the Raw Nerve racing team will defend their Brisbane – Gladstone Multihull Race trophy with the smaller 9.24m ocean sailing sprint machine catamaran Raw to The Core...

RawNerve.jpg (76560 bytes) Raw Nerve    by Stuart Bloomfield, Designer/navigator    published 28-Feb-2008

Raw Nerve, the 56' Crowther Racing Catamaran lost its rig in heavy upwind conditions a few hours into the Adelaide to Port Lincoln Blue Water Classic of the South Coast of Australia on the weekend. Three hours into the race the port shroud failed at the lower terminal causing the rig to fall down and subsequently destroy itself on impact with the ocean. The boat was sailing well in the rough upwind conditions that caused a large proportion of the fleet to withdraw from the race;

a loud BANG followed by the crackle of carbon fibre ripping apart and a few more bangs signaled the end of of the race for the catamaran. The crew towed the pieces 20nm back to Adelaide so the hardware can be recycled and the failure investigated.
