French skipper Charles Caudrelier wins the first Arkéa Ultim Challenge - Solo Around the World Race

(February 27, 2024; Day 52) – French solo racer Charles Caudrelier, skipper of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, crossed the finish line off the coast of Brest to win the 2024 Arkea Ultim Challenge-Brest, the first ever solo multihull race around the world, sailed by a giant 32m long ULTIM class trimarans.

Caudrelier was unchallenged from the start. Before he had to slow to avoid a huge storm at Cape Horn in the Pacific Ocean, he was ahead of record time for sailing solo round the world.

His elapsed time for the 28,000-mile (51,000-kilometer) race was 50 days 19 hours 07 minutes 47 seconds and beat the five other yachts in the fleet. The race started on January 7, 2024 and he was the only competitor that did not require a pit stop for repairs.

Caudrelier was locked into a duel with 26-year-old Tom Laperche down the South Atlantic, but then widened the gap to over 2500 miles. Laperche then had to retire into Cape Town with damage caused by a collision.

Manhandled by the weather, but spared by bad luck, Caudrelier had to observe two breaks on the course. He first waited several days near Cape Horn, after thirty days of racing, then stopped in the Azores, in the last stretch, to let a storm pass.

Departing after a three-day stopover, rested and well-shaven, Charles Caudrelier finished the journey in slow motion preserving his tired boat as much as possible and focused more on victory than his time.

Offshore Multihull Rating (OMR) System

The MYCQ Administers the Offshore Multihull Rating (OMR) System, which is used to handicap all Multihull Yachts. It is similar to the IRC system used for monohulls but is tailored to be applied to all Multihull Designs. This website provides:

The MYCQ regularly reviews the OMR formulas by looking at race results and analysing trends and new technologies to ensure the OMR system is current and as accurate as possible.

As with most handicapping systems, it is not perfect and rather than criticizing the system and the people that administer it we encourage you to become involved in the club and contribute to developing the system.
