A Room With a View

Room' was launched in Cairns in 1994 as a cruiser /racer version of 'Top Gun'. Builder/owner Wayne Turner moved aboard and enjoyed two years of life on the water when she was then sold to Subagio, a resident of Jakarta.

The launch of 'Room' was very timely, she was able to participate in a succession of race events which were exotic to say the least, and was fortunate to have win success in most.

Launched in late '94 Wayne and Kevin promptly set sail for Pt. Moresby returning to Cairns after a few beers, about 1000 mile just to get the feel of her. Next was another 2 up sail to Brisbane, returning to Townsville in time to enter the Coral Sea Classic race series. 'Room' took line honours in all races of the series, of particular note she managed to average near 17 knots over the distance of about 450 miles.

Following the return to Cairns 'Room' cruised to Darwin and joined the fleet in the Darwin-Ambon, Bali-Jakarta, and Kings Cup Regatta taking line honour wins in all races and handicap win in most. The 1995 series was special due to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Indonesia's independence. It is probably difficult for one to imagine the awesome view of the harbour with ships as far as one could see, war ships of many nations, tall ships from the four corners of the world, cruising and race yachts of all variety. The Indonesian hospitality was overwhelming wherever she went during the races and the cruise through the Indonesian island chain to Singapore, making the journey one to remember.

Cruising Malaysia and Thailand, leading up to the Kings Cup Regatta at Phuket, proved to be a continuation of the wonderful adventures and new friendships, an experience that money alone could not buy. The Kings Cup Regatta hosted that year by Tag Heur (and others) was unlike any regatta held in Australia.

In 1996 Subagio provided a new berth in Jakarta for A Room With a View where she would be the pride of the local fleet. The all-Indonesian crew entered and won line honours in the 1996 Darwin-Ambon, providing enthusiasm for future events. Unfortunately the magic of '95 would not be repeated for 'Room' in the subsequent years.

A Room with a View is Divinylcell foam core, glass and kevlar fabric, vinylester resin, vacuum bag and hand layup. It has a aluminium front beam and cat walk with netting to open wing areas. Each hull has 2 separate compartments. The central pod provides accommodation, nav station, galley, and all sail controls in one location.

Offshore Multihull Rating (OMR) System

The MYCQ Administers the Offshore Multihull Rating (OMR) System, which is used to handicap all Multihull Yachts. It is similar to the IRC system used for monohulls but is tailored to be applied to all Multihull Designs. This website provides:

The MYCQ regularly reviews the OMR formulas by looking at race results and analysing trends and new technologies to ensure the OMR system is current and as accurate as possible.

As with most handicapping systems, it is not perfect and rather than criticizing the system and the people that administer it we encourage you to become involved in the club and contribute to developing the system.
